The difference
Good day, it has been a couple of weeks since I've been able to join everyone and share my thoughts, questions and of course- answers. So much is going on in the world and there continues to be discontent, distrust and a lack of oversight that has been revealed. Once again, just this week USA Today revealed the real hard evidence of the "governing" body called USA Gymnastics, or disgusting lack thereof. Yes, I will continue with the reminders and updates on that particular subject as it evolves. Nothing rattles my nerves more than a so-called organization that is supposed to serve as an overseer of young athletes protecting their image-- rather than those that they serve.
However, I will not regress into another meandering diatribe, but I will digress into other subject matters and questions of humanity. The somewhat jokingly bestowed superhero name of "Answerman" was given to me. Over the course of time, my younger (but adult) daughter decided that every superhero needs a sidekick. Mine is a red dragon with gold wings that she gave me a couple years ago. In her words "Dad, you kick ass, you need to have a bad-ass sidekick, nothing is more bad-ass than a dragon." My sidekick is named Questions.
To my daughters and granddaughter I am a superhero. I am human, but we all have a responsibility to lead the next generation. Leadership is a superhero quality, it is a responsibility, one lost on those self-serving individuals, organizations and governing bodies. Sometimes our only sidekick is the one in the mirror every day. If you can look at yourself and know that you did the right thing to improve humanity yesterday and today then you are a hero. If you do it every day then you are super!
Every day I ask myself a question that begins with "What if I...?" What if I decide not to be responsible today, what will happen? What If I reach out to my friend in need without them asking for help? What if I.....fill in the blank my dear readers. What if I decide to treat everyone with respect and learn more about the people I meet everyday? Will that make the world just a little better? If everyone asked themselves that question and did just one small thing thent he amalgamation and aggregation of the positive motion would greatly improve humanity. What is I did the small things?
Once upon a time when I was blogging about my e-dating experiences I came across several quizzical profiles and requests. One woman had a minimum of a Doctorate degree of any sort as her educational background. I had written that such a small fraction of humanity possessed this level and that many were married so her dating pool was shallow...as was her thought process. Bill Gates literally changed the world, in many ways technologically but together with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation beyond technology. Bill Gates dropped out of college.
My best living friend, Jeff is one of the smartest people I've ever met. Jeff went from high school into the military. He learned by reading and observing, just without the formal education. If he wants or needs to know how to do something he will look it up, read, learn it and move on. I know two other people just like him. I have relied on all of them at different points of my life- and I respect their intellect, abilities and what they offer to humanity. Too many people view only formal education as a sign of intelligence and are otherwise disrespectful to those without some form of degree.
I recently bought a "blue collar" business. It has been a little bumpy, but will smooth out. The business potential, margins etc are good within the modeland with hard but smart work it could be the best career decision I've made. In just a few months I've come across a few dozen ignorant people who think that there's no reason to be respectful of those around them. The reality is that none of us can look at someone and know the whole story.
The Answerman is not one to back down--from anything--just ask my daughters. While out working with part of my crew one day some young ass-clown snarkily said in passing "I bet you wish you stayed in school." I gave him a response that made him blanch and then turn red in embarrassment. It turns out I have a higher edcucation level, more business experience and could point out his several missteps, lower profit ceiling - which I did in detail, to the point that he continued to ask questions. I said "I charge $200/hr for consulting services." I got an apology.
The Anserman says "Question what you can do for the world around you, with some assistance or by yourself. Be respectful of others and don't ever allow anyone to be disrespectful toward you. We are the difference in both positive and negative ways through our thoughts, words and actions."
