I wish...and I wish...and I wish
Good day readers,
Here we are in mid-February, post Groundhog day, post Super bowl, post Valentines day. Hmmm, so we inch toward Spring with slightly longer days of light and a little less cold. Honestly, in my fictional home of greater Questionopolis, it has been unseasonably warm this winter. We are in southeast Pennsylvania, known as the "greater Philadelphia" region. PA is the home state to the hamlet of Punxsutawney. The town that houses weather prognosticator Punxsutawney Phil-THE groundhog of Groundhog Day (February 2).
In short order- The groundhog, Phil, saw his shadow. Well, it WAS sunny that day. What's it mean? Six more weeks of wintery weather. This winter has been more like an early spring anyway in Questionopolis so it is really no big deal. The corpulent, ground- dwelling rodent is quite expansive and with sunshine can throw quite a shadow while his handlers are holding him up in the air.
Next up, Valentine's day, I know, I changed the order, more in a moment. Valentine's day to me was all about when I was young and dating. Even when I was married my wife was of the same mind. Strange, we did not agree on much, but agreed on the thought that it was a "Hallmark holiday" and therefore one of no importance. I do wish I had more relationship success and maybe I wouldn't feel that way...but still don't give it much thought.
I skipped over the Super bowl. Yes, I did. I skipped over it because the Philadelphia Eagles lost the 2023 championship game capping the 2022 season. My Philadelphia Eagles. I wish the Eagles had won. In short order The Philadelphia Union, our soccer team, went as far as you could go an not win the championship at the end of the 2022 season. Through both overtime periods, holding a lead with 1:27 remaining and a man advantage, then got tied and went to "kicks from the penalty mark." Losing the MLS cup after a full 120 minutes of playing time and a shoot out. UGH. Gut punch.
Then our Philadelphia Phillies baseball team that went from last place in their division, fired the coach and wound up miraculously in the 2022 World Series after barely making the playoffs. The Phillies lost. The Phillies and the Union lost on the exact same day! The Eagles were the best team in the league all year. They were the favorite to win-- oddly for Philadelphians, we prefer to be the underdog because that is who we are, we like to be underestimated. We wished and we wished and we wished.
When I was a young teen, in the calendar year 1980, the Eagles went to their first Super bowl and lost, the Flyers, our hockey team went to the Stanley Cup finals...and lost. Our 76ers basketball team went to the NBA finals...and lost. The Phillies baseball team won the 1980 world series. I hope this 2023 calendar year ends with some championship. The engagement in the entertainment of the local sports teams is a distraction from the vagaries of life. Sports are a distraction from the horrors of war and natural destruction going on around the world. The success of the local team(s) bring joy. Smiles, Cheers and laughter will always be more welcome than crying, tears and despair. As an avid news junkie, my morning and evening news cast bring sadness, disgust, dismay and disappointment in humanity.
The Answerman says "I wish for happiness. I wish for joy for everyone and I wish the world to be a better place for each and everyone one of us. If it starts with merely a rooting effort and can spread to better things for humanity- a greater sense of community then we should all support our teams. Take the next step and ensure that we always support each other, every day."
Be Good, Be Safe,
Answerman
