Braking and Breaking
Hello readers, it has become April, and vernal equinox has passed bringing all of us in my hemisphere to Spring. I think that the great people of Questionopolis can put away the snow shovels and break out the garden shovels. Time passes, at times seemingly quickly, at other times ticking slowly, eventually, as I once wrote so long ago until the years pile up behind us like waves on a beach.
I can still remember sitting in a 6th grade class room and the clock never seemed to move, it was english class with Sister Mary I-want-to-Intimidate-you and "don't dangle your participles in my classroom!!!" Every day at 2:30 a tricked out van, belonging to the older sibling of a schoolmate would drive by the school and their horn would play a tune. All of us then knew there was only 45 minutes left in our day. I remember it vividly from my second-row-from-the-window seat two desks from the rear of the room.....it was 39 years ago. Waves, waves on sand, the sandy beaches of life.
Last week I had to go out on a job for my new small company, a call-back visit in one of my old neighborhoods. The same family that owned the beverage distributor is still there, but in their third home since I moved. They are across the street from the Police Athletic League where I used to run around until we moved....42 years ago. Waves.
I also had to go out to do a favor for a new client and go to a far away site for him. He asked if I was familiar with the area. I told him I was, that I used to play soccer with my adult league team at the fields down the street. I knew it had been some time since we last played there....16 years ago. No, I thought, that can't be right, my math was off. Then I realized that it has been 9 years since I stopped playing and played for two other teams in two other leagues after I stopped running my own team...13 years ago. Waves.
At times I take life in which is what lends to the very vivid memories that I enjoy. Everyone should brake and live the moments. The words I've spoken before are "Don't let life live you down." There are reminders that come up, sometimes too late in the form of regret, the "I wish I would have's." This isn't a reminder to create a "bucket list," merely a reminder to take a break. The reality is that I've always been very driven, in business, in life, definitely athletically. When I didn't take the time to enjoy life it became time that I cannot get back. We only go in one direction in life- forward.
While passively listening to Florence and the Machine, Florence Welch inquires "What if they are creating the disaster within themselves?" There it is dear readers- the What If? moment. Yes, we all really can create the disaster within ourselves in many ways. Being driven is better than being lazy, however the decisions we make or positions we take are the cause that creates the effect, whether with passion or abject laziness. If we make decisions that affect ourselves currently it could lead to unpleasant memories or lost opportunities. In essence that wave has passed us. Braking, braking for life. Breaking, breaking from life. Breathe.
Enjoy the sun, the rain, the laughter, firelight and moonlight- and the sounds of music. Appreciate the friendships that endure. Singer/Songwriter Steve Winwood nails it with this lyric from Back in the High Life: "It seemed to me that my life went on to fast/I had to make things slow down/Just to make the good parts last." The reality is that everyone should be able to look back over the mythical shoulder of their life and enjoy the sands of their beach. The memories that are bubbling, foaming waves slowly disappering beneath our feet into the beach of our life. It is then that we should turn back toward the future, to the great ocean of life and begin to appreciate the waves that are being created.
The Answerman says "Don't let life go on too fast, change when things are not going well so that you don't create the disaster within yourself. Slow down, enjoy the turns and curves of life, it entails taking care of yourself as well as those you've kept close to you."
