Finding The Way Home
Good day readers! I am a big fan of music and of the very short list or regrets in life is the fact that I never stayed with the guitar or bass that I used to play. As a writer I have written many songs but have no music to partner with the lyrics. Once the tune that was rolling around in my head dissolves I'm left with the lyrics. Anyone that writes knows what the words mean to them- but to someone else it may not make any sense. The often celebrated and as frequently pilloried band Yes has some great music and ridiculous lyrics...and they are going into the Hall of Fame.
Where's this thought train going Answerman?
I will get there, I promise. I went to legendary local musician G.Love and Special Sauce's show last night, great musicians and lyricists. He/They are not "big-time" but still great and have stood the test of time. Anyway, as I was going through my day yesterday there was music in the background. I don't know about all of you, but sometimes it is truly in the background merely replacing silence, other times I listen to the music and take in the lyrics "shots of tequila well they say" I really need ya" -what they really need, is just a little room to breathe..." 1999.G. Love & Special Sauce
I agree, sometimes the answer to the stress is a little room from life's challenges to merely breathe and clear your mind. Nothing else is really needed. The ironic part is that as a writer the words to a piece- particularly a song will just fill up my mind. If I don't stop what I'm doing and write it down they could all just dissipate like vapor. In discussions with other writers they have concurred.
It can be a great way to clear the mind, write it down and then it is done. The infamous story of cleaning my chimney some 6-7 years ago and the words and tune to a song were rolling around inside my head. I climbed down off the roof and wrote down that song.
The lyrics have become something that my closest female friends like to tease me about, as the song was about a red haired woman from Delaware. At that point I'd never dated a red head or a woman from DE. I later dated a red head who was a University of DE alumnae. We can just say that never lead to another song...or a dance. However, I will always have the song for which I am grateful. I like it, my friends can tease me about it, they are my friends - and it did clear my head.
Steve Winwood is one of my all time favorite musicians and writers. In 1969, while part of the short- lived supergroup Blind Faith he wrote and sang a song called Can't find my way home. Part of the lyrics; You are the reason I've been waiting so long. Somebody holds the key/well, I'm near the end and I just ain't got the time/and I'm wasted and I can't find my way home.… Somebody does indeed hold the key. Each of us holds the key to our own reality.
There are times when we feel like we don't have the time- but if your mind is not clear it will cloud your ability to make cogent, organized decisions. The "way home" in essence is the ability to make decisions for ourselves and the world we directly and impact. We cannot have a positive impact if our mind is not clear.
The way home, the way back to ourselves and the meaning that we all want to have in our life cannot be accomplished if you're wasted. Oh, and the key, we each hold the key for ourselves. As my friend MGZ says; "The only thing we really control are our thoughts- so keep them positive." This is sometimes a big challenge.
If you are able to accomplish the feat of clearing your mind then take the advice from my longtime aquaintance, Dr. Roger Smith "Life is short, be nice." Simple, eh? Yes it is. There is almost no effort required to be nice. Find it within yourself. Be grateful for the things in life that make you happy- then be nice to everyone around you.
The Answerman says "Lyrics speak to each of us, finding the way home is finding inner peace. Breathe, be nice to each other and it will help you to keep your thoughts positive. You hold the key to finding the way home." Just for laughs; I want to meet a girl from 1st state and if she likes me I'll take it, and from there I'll just make it. You see, even cleaning chimneys can make me introspective and positive.
